TL:DR

Rebuilding a secure and fast website that will change the world through its educational content.

Project introduction

We had an amazing opportunity to work with The Micro:bit Educational Foundation to deliver their new educational platform that will supplement the BBC Micro:bit - a small, card-sized, modular, mini-computer that you use to create programs with - a truly impressive product.

A website to serve the globe

How do you build a website with a global audience, that is fast, secure, accessible, and easy to use and update?

How will you manage content?

How easy is it to translate the content?

No doubt you will have these questions when you're looking to deliver high-quality educational content that will be served to millions of children.

The Micro:bit team decided to go with SanityCMS - a customizable, headless CMS to manage and provide an API for the content. We also used GatsbyJS to pre-render our static site with the data from SanityCMS serving the data. Finally, translations were provided by Crowdin - a cloud-based crowd-translation service.

Our involvement

Our role was to speed up the development of the site - enabling us to meet a 3-month deadline. Using our front-end skills, we were able to hit this target, with the site launching soon after completion.

We created a bespoke UI framework to adhere to Micro:bit design language that also integrates with the CMS - giving the content control over how it is displayed to its users. Accessibility was also at the forefront of development and we ensured this by auditing at project milestones.
